How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Coat

Choosing the right dog coat starts with one thing: accurate measurements. A well-fitted coat keeps your dog comfortable, warm, and free to move — without slipping, rubbing, or restricting their walk.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you measure your dog like a pro particularly for our beautiful range of colourful soft-shell coats.

Why Proper Measurements Matter

A correctly sized coat ensures:

  • No rubbing under the arms or chest

  • Easier movement during play and walks

  • Better insulation on cold or rainy days

  • A secure, comfortable fit — especially for active dogs

Whether you're buying a ready-made coat or a custom softshell, getting the measurements right makes all the difference.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string + ruler)

  • Your dog standing in a natural, relaxed position

  • A treat or two for cooperation 🐾

The Three Essential Measurements

Below are the three key measurements most coats — including softshell designs — rely on.

1. Back Length

Measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the start of the tail.
Tip: Keep the tape straight along the spine, not following body curves.

2. Chest / Girth

Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog’s chest, usually right behind the front legs.
Tip: This is the most important measurement for ensuring a snug but comfortable fit.

3. Neck

Measure around the base of the neck where a collar naturally rests.
Tip: Allow a little space so it’s secure but not tight.

Extra Helpful Measurements (Especially for Custom Coats)

These aren’t always required but can improve fit for unique body shapes:

  • Chest to Tail Drop – how far the coat should extend down the sides

  • Underbelly Length – useful for male dogs or breeds with deep chests

  • Front Width – great for broad-chested breeds like Frenchies

If you’re unsure which measurements you need, just ask — we’re here to help.

Breed-Specific Tips

  • Long-bodied dogs (Dachshunds, Bassets): Prioritise back length and underbelly coverage.

  • Broad-chested dogs (French Bulldogs, Pugs, Staffies): Chest measurements are most important.

  • Slim, short-coated dogs (Whippets, Italian Greyhounds): A snug and precise fit helps retain warmth.

Every dog is shaped a little differently, which is why custom sizing can make a big difference.
