How to Care for Your Handmade Fabric Dog Collar, Lead & Harness

Can I wash my Handmade Fabric Dog Collar, Lead & Harness?

At Barkley & Fetch, every collar, lead and harness is designed, cut and sewn by hand in our Marple workshop. Because they’re handmade using quality fabrics and sturdy hardware, a little care goes a long way in keeping them looking good, feeling comfortable and staying safe for everyday adventures.

Washing Your Dog’s Collar, Lead & Harness

Regular washing helps keep your dog’s accessories fresh, especially after muddy walks, beach trips or rainy days.

  • Wash on a gentle cycle in the washing machine

  • Use a low temperature to protect the fabric and stitching

  • Fasten all clips and buckles before washing to prevent them knocking against the drum or each other

  • Wash with similar colours where possible

Avoid harsh detergents or fabric softeners, as these can break down fibres over time.

Drying – Keep It Natural

After washing, allow your collar, lead or harness to dry naturally.

  • Lay flat or hang to air-dry

  • Do not tumble dry

  • Avoid direct heat sources such as radiators

Natural drying helps maintain the shape, strength and finish of the fabric and hardware.

Regular Safety Checks

Because your dog’s accessories are used daily, it’s important to check them regularly for signs of wear and tear.

Take a moment to look over:

  • Stitching and seams

  • Fabric wear, fraying or thinning

  • Clips, buckles and D-rings

If you notice any damage, it’s best to stop using the item to avoid potential safety issues. Handmade accessories are made to last, but no product is indestructible, especially with adventurous dogs.

Handmade, Looked After, Loved for Longer

With simple care and regular checks, your Barkley & Fetch collar, lead or harness can stay comfortable, practical and looking great for years to come. Thoughtful care not only protects your investment, but also keeps your dog safe on every walk.

If you ever have questions about caring for your Barkley & Fetch pieces, we’re always happy to help.
